Hypnosis, or Hypnotherapy, can be explained Scientifically and Metaphysically

This is one of the many reasons that I found myself drawn to this amazing modality. Science has shown that hypnosis is actually a unique state of consciousness in which different parts of the brain are active, or perhaps, more noticeable. According to this particular study, reduced activation in the area of the brain known as the anterior cingulate cortex, which is involved in many different cognitive functions and decision making happens during hypnosis.

Pain is processed as emotion in this part of the brain and so are the emotions that are associated with making decisions. The reason that this is helpful in a hypnotherapy session, is it creates a space where the emotions associated with a painful experience can be released permanently. Once the emotions have been released, the memory is no longer painful. We are creating positive, permanent change!

Hypnosis can also be described as a focused state of relaxation in which we are more susceptible to suggestions. We are given suggestions hundreds, if not thousands of times in a day, every day. Every time we make a choice, we have chosen a suggestion.

An interesting article shows that watching TV for less than one minute lowers a person’s brain waves from beta waves, our normal waking state, into alpha waves, which is a light relaxation. The lower our brain waves, the more open to receiving suggestions we become. This is why television advertising works so well. We all move in and out of varying states of trance every day – daydreaming is a hypnotic state. Becoming so involved in an activity that time is lost is also a hypnotic state. Ever driven somewhere and don’t remember the drive? That is a hypnotic trance!

Ever been so comfortable when you’re falling asleep that you simply don’t want to move your body, yet you’re still aware of your thoughts? That’s a hypnotic trance. In fact, that is when your conscious mind has slowed down enough that it has slipped into a restful state, the critical mind has quieted down and your subconscious mind has become more present. This is why utilizing this state is so beneficial! This is where our operating system resides. Suggestions given in this state, if accepted, will become permanent. Also, in this state, emotions stored from traumatic events can be released, bringing freedom from the event.
